SMSC Launches Concert Series - Friday May 6 PDF Print E-mail

Artists: Keith Mullins and Kim Dunn
Date: Friday, May 6th at 7: 00 p.m.

We are fortunate to have Keith Mullins and Boutlier's Point own Kim Dunn team up as our premier performers for the first of what I hope will be series of concerts at SMSC.

Kim Dunn is a veteran of the Maritime music scene and beyond and is known as a talented and versatile "player." Symphony Nova Scotia, in promotional material for a joint venture this coming season, refers to his extraordinary keyboard work as "jazz piano" and that is true as far as it goes. However, his range of musical styles is much more eclectic than "jazz" would typically connote. I call it a blend of jazz, pop, folk, and adult alternative all superimposed on a definite Maritime foundation. Although he continues to be Rita MacNeill's keyboardist, and a collaborator with many others, the last few years have seen him launch out on a solo career as well. We are fortunate that he has. Check Kim out at http://www.kimdunn.ca/welcome.html Go to music and try "I Wish My Heart Could Speak" and especially "Backroads of Heaven" (you may find out that you already know him!).

Keith Mullins is an up and coming singer/song writer/guitar player/percussionist. Keith now hails from Stewiacke but is a Cape Bretoner from a musical family and this shows in all of the best ways. When I say "up and coming" it doesn't mean he hasn't been around the block a few times working with such Maritime icons as Lennie Gallant, Jimmie Rankin, and Gordie Sampson, to name just three. Keith is also an eclectic type though his webpage describes his Localmotive Farm album as Folk Soul. I was especially entranced by his Latin sounds which are the real deal after a period of living and training in Cuba. See more about Keith at http://keithmullins.ca/bio

Together, Kim and Keith combine a blend of the soulful and evocative mixed up with upbeat tunes and large doses of humour. They have the potential to move you to tears in both directions!

Concert Schedule

Cocktail Hour - 7:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m.
Concert - 8: 00 p.m.-10:30 p.m. with Intermission

The House Concert Scene

House concerts are a relatively new and rising phenomenon in North America and Nova Scotia has been at the forefront  (go to www.acousticroof.ca) These are sit down and listen (no talking affairs) that provide the quality that you would expect at the Rebecca Cohn with the intimacy of the Maritime kitchen.

In Nova Scotia, a number of generous hosts hold these concerts in their living rooms (there is a longstanding venue in Boutilier's Point and one just starting in Upper Tantallon). People bring their own refreshments (something like what we do at TGIFs) and the mostly finger foods and sweets are consumed during the intermission. These hosts collect the gesture of appreciation for the artist(s), sometimes $15.00 per head but more often $20.00 per person. These are "please present cash" arrangements. We hope to honour the same tradition so all proceeds will be headed to the artists (SMSC keeps the proceedings from the bar).

We hope you will join in for this terrific evening that will allow us to get reacquainted after the long winter in addition to hearing a superb concert. Here?s what I would ask you to do if you wish to attend:

  1. Write back to me at steveperrott at eastlink dot ca  (or call at 820-2305) with the number of seats you wish to reserve. I need nothing in advance but I will be looking for $20.00 per person CASH during the concert.
  2. If you can manage, please bring some sort of food contribution for the munchies table. TGIF style offerings are great.
  3. Please plan to come at 7:00 p.m. for the Cocktail Hour to socialize and patronize the bar a bit. At 8:00 p.m. we should all be seated with no more trips to the bar until the intermission.
