Special Presentation: Adventures Had; Adventures to Come PDF Print E-mail

When: Thursday, July 28th at 7: 30 p.m.
Where: Saint Margaret Sailing Club

Please come out next Thursday night to hear about last year’s Clipper Around the World Race from our own Jane Filbee. Jane’s presentation promises to engage and allow those of us who are less intrepid (me, for example) to experience the adventure vicariously. Jane has already presented to enthusiastic audiences at other Clubs in the area; let’s make sure that a good crowd comes out and gives Jane a warm reception at home!

Following Jane’s presentation, Karen Dexter and Dana Archibald will briefly outline their plans for their run for the 2012 Olympics in the 470 class. Although entrance for Jane’s presentation is free, the House will be happy to receive donations to support Karen and Dana’s endeavour. It is optional, of course, but $10.00 is suggested. They have a big challenge ahead of them. Perhaps we can help?

Please write back to me as soon as possible to let me know if you intend to be in attendance. We have a collective habit of not making these decisions until the last minute; if this is the case for you, no problem, we will be delighted to have you show up at the door. However, if you are inclined to attend, please let me know (with the number in your party) as soon as possible at steveperrot at eastlink dot ca. Obviously, Jane would like to ensure that she has an audience to present to and organizers (in this case, me) need some “heads-up” for logistical purposes.

Brief Bios

Jane Filbee has been a long standing member of St Margaret’s Sailing Club. Her sailing experience was gained throughout her adult life and includes local racing, extensive cruising and ocean sailing. Jane has raced in four Marblehead to Halifax Ocean Races and has sailed from here to such places as South Coast Newfoundland, Bermuda and Sable Island. In 2010 she took part in the Clipper Round the World Race crewing on three of the legs – Australia to Singapore; Singapore to Qingdao China; Qingdao China to San Francisco, USA. Jane has offered to share her experiences on the Clipper race with the membership.

Karen and Dana have worked their way through the Canadian Youth Sailing Circuit, winning a Silver at the 2009 Canada Summer Games. Wanting to continue their athletic career, their next challenge was to jump onto the World stage and compete against the very best in the Olympic 470 class. With just only 6 months of training in the 470, they qualified themselves for the 2011 National Sailing Team by place top Canadian at the Miami Olympic Class Regatta in January 2011. They have put everything aside as they have set their sights on representing Canada at the London 2012 Olympics.
