Parents are as important as their children in SMSC’s Learn to Sail Program. As a parent, you want your child to have a great learning experience this summer. You also want him/her to have fun, practice responsibility, learn technique and safety skills and develop an abiding enthusiasm for sailing.ch

The learn to sail students need parental support just as much as they need the instruction and experience they will have in this program. While our trained instructors teach the theory and practice of sailing, they need the involvement of parents to support their efforts.

SMSC expects parents to be prompt in the drop-off and pick-up of students. The children will come equipped each day with the necessary safety items:

Personal flotation device (PFD), close toed shoes for sailing (no rubber boots), sunscreen (at least SPF30), change of clothes, rain jacket (even on sunny days), towel, water bottle, lunch, hat, sunglasses and wetsuit (optional).

Parents will also be asked to volunteer as often as possible to insure that extra events such as Island Day run as smoothly as possible.

Lunch Program

SMSC Jr Sail will be offering a lunch program this summer. The lunch will include:

  • a sandwich (turkey, ham, roast beef or Peanut Butter and Jam),
  • a drink (orange juice, apple juice, sport drink),
  • a yogurt (vanilla, peach, strawberry or Fieldberry) or a cheese string,
  • a granola bar (sweet and salty or chewy trail mix) and
  • fresh fruit (apple or banana)

The cost will be $6 per day. A second sandwich can be added for an additional cost of $2. Parents will be able to select which days they would like lunches (and pay for them) at registration. Students will also be able to purchase lunches at lunch time each day however we can't stock excessive amounts of food and would really appreciate people signing up in advance.

Wednesdays and Fridays will be Hot Dog and Pizza days respectively. This will be in place of the sandwiches in the list above. If you sign up in advance you can opt for sandwiches on Hot Dog and Pizza days.

The canteen also has water, pop and chips for purchase. Parents can set up tabs for their children for these or the lunches although tab policies have changed:

  • All tabs must be prepaid by the parents before the child is able to charge anything to it at the canteen
  • Tabs can be topped up at any time by phone or in person at the club. Regular club hours are 10am-8pm Monday-Saturday and 10am-6pm Sunday.
  • Once a tab has been prepaid any remaining amount cannot be refunded but will be available until August 31st, 2010
  • We can limit what your child can charge to your tab (ie. only lunch and water or no pop etc). You can specify this when you prepay
