Parents are as important as their children in SMSC’s Learn to Sail Program. As a parent, you want your child to have a great learning experience this summer. You also want him/her to have fun, practice responsibility, learn technique and safety skills and develop an abiding enthusiasm for sailing.

The learn to sail students need parental support just as much as they need the instruction and experience they will have in this program. While our trained instructors teach the theory and practice of sailing, they need the involvement of parents to support their efforts.

Daily Schedule

0830 - 0900 Drop Off
0900 - 1600 Jr Sail Program
1600 - 1630 Pick Up

What you need to bring:

  • Personal Floatation Device (PFD) or Lifejacket
  • Closed toed shoes (will get wet, old sneakers or watershoes. No rubber boots)
  • Warm clothes for outdoor on the water use
  • Multiple changes of clothes
  • Bathing Suit & Towel
  • SPF 45+ waterproof sunscreen
  • Hat and sunglasses
  • Lunch (Lunch program available)
  • Drinks (Water is preferred as heat stroke and dehydration can occur, even if you're playing in the water.)
  • Wetsuit (highly recommended)
  • Rain Jacket (Even on sunny days)
Having appropriate clothing is very important the higher the level your sailing gets. Especially for our older Bronze sailors who will be consistently sailing outside into the larger Bay, dressing in layers is crucial. Especially with the rapidly changing Nova Scotia Weather having the right clothes for every situation is very important. Have a warm base layer with a fabric that will lift moisture off the skin or a wet suit. Next have a light jacket or splash guard on top, something that your son or daughter could easily put on or take off. Preferably this top layer should be water and wind proof. Avoid wearing cotton or denim as these fabrics will absorb cold water and cause the sailor to have constant chills for the remainder of the day. Our instructors will sit down and talk with our sailors about how to properly dress for every occasion. However, take the time to talk with your young sailor how to dress in layers and how to be prepared!
