Youth Sailing at SMSC

St Margaret Sailing Club's Junior Sail programs are a great way to stay active and have fun this summer. Our programs allow young sailors to spend their summer days enjoying life on the water while developing sailing skills and lifelong friendships. Our courses are taught by Sail Canada (formerly Canadian Yachting Association) certified instructors who allow students to experience sailing in a fun-filled, challenging and safe manner.

Program Information:

  • All learn to classes run weekdays from 9:00am to 4:00pm
  • The popular lunch program will be offered again this year
  • Membership isn't required for youth learn to sail programs (although we'd love to see you join)
  • There is no additional HST on top of the listed prices
  • Programs are tax deductible (consult your tax specialist)
** More Info about clothing and day schedule can be found on the Parent Information page.**

Programs Offered:

Opti Wet-Feet (ages 8-10)

This 2 week program is an introduction to the one-person ’Optimist’ sailboat and is appropriate for young sailors aged 8 to 10. A very gentle beginner course, days are split between sailing an Optimist and recreational activities that include field games, nature walks, visiting local beaches by water, and swimming. No experience required.

Session 1  July 1 - 12
Session 2  July 15 - 28
Session 3 July 29 - August 9
Session 4 August 12 - 23

CANSail 1 (ages 10+)

CANSail 1 may be completed after taking Opti Wet-Feet or with no sailing experience at all (we recommend 10 year olds with no experience take Opti Wet-Feet). This class is taught to the CANSail 1 standard in two person Echo's and smaller one person Optimists and covers basic sailing skills. Due to the large amount of material in CANSail 1 we recommend signing up for two sessions.

Session 1  July 1 - 12
Session 2  July 15 - 26
Session 3  July 29 - August 9
Session 4  August 12 - 23

CANSail 2

CANSail 2 may be completed after CANSail 1. This class is taught to the CANSail 2 standard in two person Echo's and smaller one person Optimists and covers intermediate sailing skills. Due to the large amount of material in CANSail 2 we recommend signing up for two sessions.

Session 1  July 1 - 12
Session 2  July 15 - 26 (Option of attending the Bay Wind regatta at SMSC July 20 & 21)
Session 3  July 29 - August 9 (Option of attending Opti-Jam in Chester August TBD)
Session 4  August 12 - 23

CANSail 3&4

This four week program is for students who have completed CANSail 2. This course is taught to the Sail Canada CANSail 3 and 4 standards in Club 420s and covers advanced sailing skills. SMSC does introduce trapeze and spinnaker at this level.

Session 1  July 1 - 26 (Option of attending the Bay Wind regatta at SMSC July 20 & 21)
Session 2  July 29 - August 23 (Option of attending Kennedy Cup at RNSYS August 24 & 25)

CANSail 5&6

This four week program is for students who have completed CANSail 4. The course is taught to the Sail Canada CANSail 5 and 6 standards in Club 420s and covers very advanced sailing and racing skills. We'd highly recommend CANSail 5 and 6 students to take both sessions.

Session 1  July 1 - 26
Session 2  July 29 - August 23

Keelboat Introduction

This four week program is for students who have completed CANSail 4. This course is taught to the Sail Canada CANSail 5 standard and serves as an introduction to keelboat sailing on a Kirby 25. This is a pilot program and is subject to registration numbers.
