Day 2 of the Trihedral CYA Youth Championships turned out to be an excellent day of sailing despite the fact that very light winds were predicted. As usual, St Margaret's Bay lived up to its international reputation as a great place to sail and have a Championship event. The racing started with a slight 5-6 kt breeze which slowly built this afternoon to 8 to 10 kts with a swell left over from Hurricane Irene adding to the fun. Racing in the Radial fleet was very aggressive at the start, leaving a number of sailors disqualified for being over the line, they actually had 4 starts before the fleet got away, the Lasers on the same course were much more organized and had 3 efficient races with no problems. Leading the Radial womens fleet is Rebecca Ableson from RSLYC in Montreal, while the Radial Male fleet is lead by Hugh Macrae of KYC in Kingston (Ontario). In the Laser Class, David Berry from RVicYC in Victoria tops the leaderboard after 2 days of racing. On Bravo course, with the 29ers and 420 classes racing windward-leeward courses, the 29er class Frederique Tougas and Florence Pepin-Delhaes from PCYC in Montreal were tops on the day. In the open 420 class Max Flinn and Andrew Burns from RNSYS in Halifax were top male and Allison Surrette and Minette Murphy also from RNSYS were top female team. Racing continues tomorrow to determine the top youth sailors in Canada and an opportunity to participate in the 2012 Youth Worlds in Ireland. Brian Todd |
