March E-Letter for Members and Friends of Saint Margaret Sailing Club 1. The Worlds Are Coming! No longer a distant buzz, the 2009 Laser Senior World and Laser Masters World Championships will soon be upon us. Various committees are now meeting several times a week, and the life of our own Rod Millar, Event Co-Chair, is no longer his own!
As we get closer much more volunteer help is needed to pull this event off with the Maritime hospitality and SMSC professionalism we want to show the world.
We have closed registration to the Laser Senior Worlds (often merely referred to as “the Worlds”), running August 17-26, maxed out at 180 competitors. After increasing our proposed maximum number of registrants for the Masters, competing August 27-September 5, we are now firmly closed, having hit the 400 competitor mark. Add in family members in tow – especially for the latter group, age 35 and older – and that’s a lot of people to accommodate. Get involved on land or water; roles include being part of the race committee, or helping out with food or medical services. Remember, this is a big deal – the largest sailing event in Canadian history - and you can be part of it!
To find out how to get involved log onto www.2009laserworlds.org/volunteer. if you have any questions call Duncan Enman (830-1948), Event Manager, or Rhonda Dennis (826-1346), Volunteer Coordinator. 2. 2009 Membership Renewals You may have received this year’s SMSC membership renewal notice via Canada Post already and if not, it will soon be in your mailbox. It’s easy to put it off and forget about it, but late remittances create headaches for the club executive not only in trying to track people down (we’re a small club, running on volunteer goodwill) but also because it leads to uncertainty in financial planning.Vice Commodore Barry Baker is looking for all dues to be paid by April 30th. 3. Senior Fleet Meeting: Mark Your Calendars Rear Commodore Wendell Lonergan has set Monday, March 23rd, 19: 30 hours as the time for this year’s Senior Fleet meeting. In view of the unusually busy summer ahead of us this year, there is much to discuss. Wendell is hoping for a strong turnout! 4. Rhumb Line The next Rhumb Line, SMSC’s printed newsletter, is slated to come out in April. It will have updates on the Worlds, Set Sail and Junior Sail; info on the moorings and new breakwater under construction... and a few surprises. However: we’re always looking for additional ideas and submissions. There are lots of good stories out there. Let's hear about them! Please e-mail me at (email removed, see Contact Us page) or call 820-2305 – before March 13. 5. Vacancy-Club Treasurer Please note the following special message from Commodore Wayne Trowse. Despite efforts to secure a new Club Treasurer, this Executive Committee position is currently unfilled. With so much important business immediately ahead of us, most notably the World Laser Championships and our major infrastructure development, the position of Club Treasurer is one we very much need to fill. If this position strikes you as potentially onerous, bear in mind that Vicki LeBlanc is now taking care of all of the bookkeeping functions. Furthermore, you may think that you need to have some sort of accounting accreditation to take on this position. Not so. Although some related experience would undoubtedly be helpful, it is by no means necessary. The position will primarily focus on the more Executive-related duties of finances. If you are interested in hearing more about this position, or can suggest another Club Member who would be a good candidate, please get in touch with me (823-1785 or (email removed, see Contact Us page)) or another Executive Member: Barry Baker (876-0401 or (email removed, see Contact Us page)), Wendell Lonergan (823-2441 or (email removed, see Contact Us page)), Paul Dennis (826-1346) or Stephen Perrott (820-2305 or (email removed, see Contact Us page)). 6. And lastly... Thanks to Ed Bottrell for all his tireless work in the past on the e-bulletins, website updates, administrative functions etc. His former role was all-encompassing enough that it has been divided up among a few people!
The club now has a new website – check it out at smsc.ca, and let webmaster extraordinaire Dave Lane know what you think.
And as you may have gathered the (two) new people at the helm of this e-newsletter are not as conscientious as Ed about getting out the news! However the current plan is to send an e-newsletter out monthly. If you have information you want to be included in the April e-newsletter, please e-mail (email removed, see Contact Us page) or call 820-2305. Deadline: April 3rd.
Any other comments, suggestions? Please get in touch!
