The Heat is On! On Deck
The Bay, The Wind, The Regatta
The Bay, Wind Regatta will be held on Saturday and Sunday, July 21st and 22nd and we need volunteers! If you are willing to help out, for even part of the weekend, drop Rear Commodore Matt Veinotte a note at mattveinotte at eastlink dot ca. And, if we can’t have your body we’d love to utilize your boat for “on bay” duties (or, better still, body and boat!). We are fortunate that Shining Waters- Atlantic Subway is once again sponsoring the event. Most of us who have been around for a while know how important this business team has been in backing SMSC activities, particularly those involving our youth, year after year after year! As an added bonus, Shining Waters is offering discounts to all of our members for a wide range of goods. On most supplies, your membership will garner you a 10% discount, while a 5% discount will be applied to certain larger ticket items such as Yanmar and Walker Bay boats. For more information call or drop Simon a line at Shining Waters (simon at shiningwaters dot ca). SMAKR 2012 Mark your calendars: St. Margaret's Annual Keelboat Regatta — SMAKR — runs this year August 11-12. Our annual keelboat regatta, which began decades ago as Squadron Days, offers friendly rivalry, a lot of food, great happy-hour refreshments and a whole lot of socializing. SMAKR is the highlight of our senior fleet races held weekly on Wednesday evenings in the summer, and on Sunday afternoons in the fall. SMSC has other keelboat races throughout the season as well — the Father’s Day Race and the Ocean Race, for example — as well as the annual Bay Wind Regatta, for dinghies, and learn-to-sail programs for adults and juniors. Add in the Friday Steak Nights, the Fish Fry, Lobster Suppers and other social events, and your dance card is full at SMSC! The SMAKR social festivities begin on Friday, Aug 10, at the weekly Steak Night, when you can register for the event and chat with fellow skippers and crew. On Saturday morning, sign up for Ed Bottrell's "Best Breakfast in the Bay" before the skippers' meeting, then it's off to the races (you can also register Sat morning); enjoy the BBQ back at the club Sat evening while you rehash stories of the day's pursuits. Sunday: again, enjoy the hearty breakfast and natter over coffee before heading out on the day's course. Your volunteer SMAKR committee is working on specific details now. Watch this space for more info. It's gonna be a time! Heather White PS: If you know of anyone who would like to be involved as a sponsor, or have comments or suggestions otherwise, please get in touch with me (heatherwhite09 at gmail dot com). July/August Clubhouse and Bar Hours
The SMSC bar is now operating on summer hours. It has become apparent that our main bar days are Wednesdays and Fridays, so we have decided to stay with a five day-a-week bar operation, Wednesday through Sunday. On Tuesdays the clubhouse will be available during the day, without bar service, since we will have grounds staff available. Should demand warrant we could extend bar hours, but past and current experience suggest that demand is lacking. Monday: closed Tuesday: 1100-1700 (Clubhouse, no bar service) Wednesday: 1500-2300 bar service Thursday: 1100-2000 (bar service from 1500) Friday: 1200-2200 (bar service) Saturday: 1100-1900 (bar service) Sunday: 1100-1900 (bar service) We are just completing a renovation of the downstairs washrooms and when complete we will supply members with the access code to the basement so that those washrooms will be accessible out-of-hours. Of course, washrooms are also available the SMSC Sailing Centre when Learn-to-sail operations are underway. Use of the upstairs Sailing centre washroom is recommended, as those in the Sailing Centre basement are used by wet junior sailors! Warren Nethercote |
