A Beginner’s Sailing Adventure on the Bay
Set Sail V for 2010 was held June 24-27, 2010. Thanks to all the 20+ club members who volunteered their time and boats which made this program a success for yet another year. We could not do this without all of you - Dave and Michelle.
The Set Sail V race results are here.
2010 Info
St. Margaret Sailing Club (SMSC) is pleased to be offering its popular entry-level sailing program for adults again this year. This 18-hour program called Set Sail V (2010) will welcome future sailors to the joys of sailing on the Bay. Set Sail will blend the basics of sailing theory and boating safety with a weekend of practice on a member’s boat, in the company of an experienced skipper and a knowledgeable sailor.
Set Sail is based, in part, on the Canadian Yachting Association (CYA) Learn to Cruise Basic Cruising Standard, which emphasizes safe and proper handling of keelboats. It will consist of two evening sessions and a full weekend in the classroom and on the water: June 24 and 25 from 6 to 9 pm and June 26 and 27 from 9 am to 4 pm. During the evening sessions you will start in the classroom and finish on the boats. On Saturday and Sunday, mornings are in the classroom and afternoons are on the boats.
Program participants will be introduced to the fundamentals of sailing in the program. You must attend the classroom sessions in order to participate in the on-water parts.
Set Sail is combined with the Pleasure Craft Operator Card (PCOC) program which will ready participants to write the PCOC exam and obtain their cards. This card is now required to operate any powered watercraft. The PCOC course material will be taught by a CYA certified instructor. If you don't want to write the exam, you don't have to, but it is included in the price regardless.
Program Registration
Set Sail V Program: Includes classroom training with coverage of PCOC required content, materials, handouts and PCOC exam. In addition, gain experience and have fun on the water on two evenings and two afternoons courtesy of SMSC member-volunteered boats (must participate in classroom training).
Members: $70*. Non-Members: $85*
Pleasure Craft Operator Card Exam (Challenge): It is also an option to challenge the exam (take the exam on Sunday morning without attending the classroom training) at a reduced rate.
Members: $25*. Non-Members: $30*
Anyone interested in registering for the program is encouraged to do so quickly (the program sold out last year) using the registration form at left. The number of spaces we can offer is dependent on the number of members that volunteer their boats and/or time as an instructor. We can't determine for sure how many students we can accommodate until about June 11. We will confirm your registration as soon as we are able.
Prior to May 21st, space will be allocated in order of receipt with preference given to SMSC members and those who live or frequent (summer resident, etc.) the bay area. We define this loosely as the area encompassing Hammonds Plains, Timberlea, Peggy's Cove, and Hubbards.
Priority will always be given to those who have not taken the program before.
Please submit your completed registration form (one per sailor) and a cheque to cover your fees. For further information, contact Dave or Michelle Lane at 442-2804.
*HST included. Once your registration has been confirmed, there will be no refunds.
