Bay SailAble

Volunteering Roles

Companion Sailor

If you’re a knowledgeable sailor and consider yourself agile enough to move around a 16-footer from time to time, you’ll be a great companion sailor. Companion sailors accompany our SailAble participants in the Martin 16, providing encouragement and support as and when needed. Training in the boat prior to your first shift will be done with the Program Director, Judy Lugar.

Dockside and On the Water Support

Are you comfortable operating a small power boat such as a whaler or a rib (think coach boat?) If so, you’re the ideal person to be on the water with the SailAble participants, and ready to lend assistance as required. If you are comfortable on the water, but not operating the power boat, you’d make a great 2nd in the boat.

Dockside helpers ensure our SailAble participants feel comfortable at SMSC

and have the support they need to get in and out of the boat. You can expect hands-on training for this role and get the support you need to feel ready to work with participants with a wide range of challenges.

Boat Maintenance

If boat maintenance is more to your liking, and you’re comfortable rolling up your sleeves, you can help ensure our SailAble keelboat is always in good working order, as well as ready for winter storage when the season is done.
